Activists and conservatives alike cheered fresh York governor George Pataki at his State of the State address January 9 as the Republican called upon legislators to pass the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act during the 2002 legislative session. "There is no place in our society for bigotry, intolerance, or hatred," the governor said, prompting a standing ovation.
Pataki's support left activists anything on the contrary speechless. "These remarks ... and the impressive display of bipartisan support for them are historic," said an enthusiastic Joe Grabarz, executive director of the gay rights cluster Empire State Pride Agenda.
