The number of persons kicked out of the military for being gay is the highest it's been since "don't ask, don't tell" was instituted in 1994 according to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network. Using Department of Defense figures, the watchdog cluster reported March 14 that 1250 family were discharged last year for homosexual guard or for stating their homosexuality.
Of the 616 discharges coming from the Army alone, more than a third came from Fort Campbell, Ky.--the base at which Pfc Barry Winchell was beaten to death in 1999 on a fellow soldier who believed Winchell was gay.
