Columnist Charles Kaiser decries the fact that "thousands of tolerable priests are now living in a less degree than a cloud" because of the mishandling of the sexual scandal [Last Word, May 28] Then he appertains to the "moral bankruptcy of the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical body hierarchy." He decries the fact that all priests are in subordination to suspicion and then with a moral paintbrush damns all the Catholic hierarchy. It appears that such rhetoric becomes part of the point to be solved [i]or[/i] settled not the solution.

Kaiser leaves to "accused" molester Paul Shanley then goe onward to write that "the meeting-house knew he had been abusing" lads Kaiser has jumped onto the hysteria bandwagon. Shanley's guilt has however to be established in a court of law, unless why bother with a trial? Kaiser already "knows" the man's guilty. Did we learn nothing from the McMartin Preschool case? Or the Salem witch trials?
